AN OPEN LETTER FROM A PARISHONER ABOUT THE CLOSING ORDER AND ETHNIC CLEANSING FEARS

This article from 4/16/2009 refers to suspected ethnic cleansing by the Diocese. Read it here: Suppression of the Hungarian Community in Cleveland by Closing St. Emeric Church.

Quoting from the article:   In effect, the diocese is conducting a campaign of decimating a specific ethnic group’s ability to maintain its cultural and language identity by creating a situation where it cannot survive realistically with the one church left remaining, in an area that parishioners from the other two closed parishes will not go to.   Just as racial discrimination is now recognized as much broader than just the outward appearances of denying access or participation to certain individuals, extending now to implied or negative characterizations or imputed attributes, so too this action on the part of the Diocese is much worse than just shutting down churches. Consciously, or unconsciously, on the part of the Diocese, but none the less in actuality, there is an anti-ethnic effect of the actions. We are experiencing a type of ethnic-cleansing, not the murderous type but the more insidious melting-pot, longer term forced conformance type. (According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “Ethnic cleansing sometimes involves the removal of all physical vestiges of the targeted group through the destruction of monuments, cemeteries, and houses of worship.”) In other countries, ethnic cleansing has been recognized for what it is, whether done by the military, the government, or a fundamentalist or orthodox religious group, or individuals and their organizations. Sadly, here, it is conveniently couched in other terms, often financially oriented or free-market justified, but with the same or worse eventual societal results.

USA Today Coverage of St. Emeric Closing Order

USA Today coverage about St. Emeric closingClick on image at left to read full article in USA Today Sunday April 12, 2009 edition, as picked up by the Associated Press. The article does a very good job of  addressing the concerns of the parishioners but does not come out forcefully  with the message that this parish has a vibrant life, good financial standing and resources, and a pastor from Europe, in a nationality-focused community church with a mission to minister to both young and old, and a lot of reasons to stay open.

APPEAL DOCUMENT

GONDOLOM  MINDENKI TUDJA A SZOMORÚ HIRT miszerint Lennon pk. a templomunkat „bezárásra” ítélte. Fellebbezési jogot engedélyezett az „Egyházi Kánonjog” alapján, amit megtettünk a „zárt időn belül”. Kérem a K. Híveket, fellebbezéssel személyesen is juttassuk kifejezésre nem-tetszésünket.

     (Megjegyezni kívánom, hogy Egyházközségünk élt az egyházi Kódex adta lehetőséggel és elküldtük a püspöki Hivatalba „fellebbező” kérésünket és esetünk felülvizsgálására vonatkozó kérelmünket. A püspöki Hivatalnak „egy hónapon belül válaszolnia kellene erre a kérésre… reméljük pozitív választ kapunk! Addig is, amíg az ügyintézés tart, arra kérek mindenkit, hogy „óvakodjunk minden túlzástól, ne kapassuk el magunkat….
)
