St. Emeric BUCSU on November 6 a Success

The turnout for the St. Emeric Bucsu, the second one held as a community in exile since the closing of St. Emeric Church, was an extraordinary success, showing that the community has a need to stay together, and maintain Hungarian traditions.

Eva Szabo, the organizer behind the event and Templom Örző, writes: This past Sunday, November 6^th, we were able to come together for the second time since our closing to celebrate our Church’s patron saint.  With Fr. Begin’s blessing and assistance, Fr. Sandor was with us to celebrate the Mass of the Feast of St. Emeric.  Thank you all for making it a special Mass. A ST. IMRE BŰCSŰ-t november 6-án tartjuk St. Colman templomban. A szentmise magyar nyelven lesz. A szentmise után mindenkit szeretettel várunk hideg ebéd büfére. Az ebéd ára kb. $10. In an effort to continue our traditions, we will have THE ST. IMRE BUCSU this year on November 6th. The Mass on November 6th will all be in Hungarian. After Mass we invite everyone for a cold buffet of stuffed loan pork, potato salad, bread, kolbász, körözött, dessert and beverages. We are estimating the cost to be around $10 per person. SZENT IMRE EGYHÁZKÖZSÉG - újabb halasztás

A vatikáni Papi Kongregáció, amely Szent Imre templomunk nyitva maradását kérvényező fellebbezésünk döntő bizottsága, újabb halasztást közölt velünk, ezennel 2012. március 1-ig. A kongregációi levél a halasztást azzal magyarázza, hogy ez megengedi ügyünk alaposabb kivizsgálását. Bár minél előbb szeretnénk visszatérni szeretett templomunkba, a hosszabbítás közlése mégis azt jelzi, hogy fellebbezésünk még folyamatban van. Továbbra is imádkozzunk a számunkra kedvező döntésért.

The Congregation for the Clergy, which is in charge of deciding on the appeal of St. Emeric Parish to remain open, has again informed us of a new extension date of March 1, 2012. The reason cited is more time to fully investigate our case. Some other parishes have also received such a letter. Although this news is not what we were expecting, at least it is a sign that our appeal is still being studied. Let us keep on praying for a favorable decision.

Vatican extends deadline for review of Cleveland Diocese church closings

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Vatican has given itself another extension to review appeals from churches closed last year by Bishop Richard Lennon of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. This marks the fourth time that the Congregation for the Clergy -- a Vatican panel handling the appeals -- has extended the deadline for reviewing the churches' cases against the diocese. St. Emeric's Peller Meets with Vatican Representative Investigating Diocese

July 12, 2011 -- Bishop John M. Smith is in Cleveland this week as a representative of the Holy See....  Critics and other sources believe the Vatican had already made a decision to send an investigator to look into the persistent complaints about Lennon's leadership and his decision to close or merge some 50 parishes.

"Bishop Smith was very attentive. This was an important case to him. I am glad the Vatican has taken such an interest," said Miklos Peller, a parishioner of St. Emeric's Hungarian parish which was ordered closed by Lennon. It was the scene of large protests since its closure, and the church building was actually occupied by protestors for a day in 2010.

Peller met with Bishop Smith for more than an hour Tuesday (July 12, 2011) at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma. "He came across as a very courteous, holy man. He came here to listen and he did," Peller told WKYC. "He didn't offer any opinions and the questions he asked me were pertinent." As to the possibility that the closing of St. Emeric, which is now under the care of the Hungarian Scouts organization, might someday be reversed, Peller said, "Maybe there is some hope." Still nothing from the Vatican on appeal - deadline passes without response

A közelmúltban jeleztem, hogy november 30-áig semmi hírt nem hallottunk a Vatikánból templomunk fellebbezésével kapcsolatban. Ugyancsak említettem, hogy ha november 30-ig meg is hoznák a döntést, azt csupán két héttel azután, azaz december 14-én kapnám kézhez a szolgálati út lassúsága miatt. December 14-én sem kaptam semmit. A következő lehetőség tegnap, azaz december 21-e lett volna. Mivel ekkor sem érkezett semmi a Vatikántól, feltehető, hogy a Papi Kongregáció sajátmaga által kitűzött döntési határidőt ismételten elhanyagolta. Mivel most már a karácsonyi és újévi ünnepek közelednek, nem valószínű, hogy a Kongregáció cselekedni fog. Pedig milyen krisztusi cselekedet lett volna katolikus egyházunk központi vezetősége részéről, hogy karácsonyi ajándékként megadják válaszukat valamilyen formában. Sajnos, a Szentszék Papi Kongregációjának a hanyagsága, nemtörődömsége, saját törvényeinek a semmibevevése, híveinek lekezelése és többszöri átrázása, a határidők megtoldásával kapcsolatos valótlanságok állítása minősíthetetlen. Így nem tudok semmi jó hírt közölni Krisztus születése ünnepére, ami a Szent Imre templom híveinek és városunk magyarságának a szívét felmelegítené. Azaz, mégis van egy jó hírem, amit szeretnék elmesélni.

Úgy történt, hogy volt egy esemény az elmúlt pénteken, ami szívünket felmelegítette és a püspökünk bezárási rendelete által okozott mély lelki sebeink fájdalmát kissé enyhítette. Ez a cserkészeink által rendezett karácsonyi ünnep volt. A püspöki erőszakkal bezárt templomunk ismét nyitva állott előttünk ragyogóan kivilágítva, tömött padokkal, kellemesen, otthoniasan befűtve és cserkészeink énekeivel, karácsonyi jeleneteikkel telítve. Isten ott volt velünk, de Jézus testét a püspökség eltávolította a templomból, miután betiltotta a szentmiséket és a templomban folytatott imádkozásokat. Sokan könnyes szemekkel lépték át az immár hat hónapja bezárt templomunk küszöbét. A cserkészek bájos szereplése azonban rövidesen felszárította a könnyeket, és mindannyian éreztük, hogy templomunk még áll a cserkészek gyámsága alatt, bármennyire is igyekezett a püspökség azt elvenni tőlünk. Ez a szép esemény mindannyiunk szívében  melegséget hozott, és kissé biztatott is egy halvány reménysugárral, hogy talán van még remény arra, hogy lesz itt még magyar karácsony, lesz még éjféli mise. Ne csüggedjünk még el!

Mindannyiunk nevében, akik jelen voltunk, köszönjük cserkészeinknek és azok áldozatkész és tehetséges vezetőinek, hogy ilyen csodálatos, kellemes, felejthetetlen élménynek mi is részesei lehettünk.

Akik követik a naptáron, ma van november 30-a, a Vatikán legutóbbi határideje a fellebbezésünkkel kapcsolatos döntés meghozatalára. Ma este már letelt november 30-a, és semmi hír nem jött felénk a Vatikántól.

Ha már meg is hozták volna a döntést valamilyen formában, az csak két hét múlva érkezne hozzám az eddig tapasztalt szolgálati út lassúságából kifolyólag. Tehát ismét várunk. Lassan már az is előbb bekövetkezik, hogy Grönland jégtakarója megolvad, mielőtt a Vatikán döntene. Munkájuk azonban növekszik, mert a minneapolis-i egyházmegye is összevonásra ítélt vagy egy tucat templomot, amelynek hívői már jelezték, hogy vatikáni fellebbezéshez folyamodnak. Elsőfokú fellebbezésüket már beadták az érseknek.

Csak hogy érzékeljük, hogy ez a látszólagos nemtörődömség mit jelent, ma volt 5 hónapja, hogy a püspök bezárta a Szent Imre templom kapuit mindennemű szentmise vagy imás áhítatosság előtt. A Vatikánhoz pedig már 2009 május 5-én adtuk be felfolyamodásunkat, azaz 19 hónappal ezelőtt, és ez idáig nem voltak képesek az illetők a saját törvényeik által megkövetelt kötelességüket teljesíteniük, ami lassan már történelmi fogalmat kezd jelenteni számunkra.

Csak azt tudom tanácsolni, hogy ne csüggedjünk még el, várjunk és imádkozzunk.

Update on the St. Emeric Appeal Process

I’d like to share a few administrative developments with you concerning our appeal of the diocesan closure decree which ordered the suppression of St. Emeric parish.  

1.  Mr. John Maimone, Chief Financial Officer of the Diocese of Cleveland has retired effective October 1, 2010. He was the chief architect of the details of church closings based on his statistical analyses, supplying data to Bishop Lennon about which parishes should be closed. Mr. Maimone is replaced by James P. Gulick.  

2.  Rev. Mr. Jim Armstrong, deacon, was the chief reconfiguration officer for the diocese. He directed the details and procedures for the closing of the churches. He was the one who informed Fr. Sandor on July 1 that he has 10 days to vacate the St. Emeric rectory. The Rev. Mr Armstrong terminated his employment with the Diocese a few weeks ago.  

3.  Claudio Cardinal Hummes, who was the Prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, and tribunal of the Roman Curia, retired from his post on October 7, 2010 at the age of 76. This congregation has been the dicastery for the review of the appeals regarding church closings, including the appeal by St. Emeric parish. We have been dealing with Cardinal Hummes ever since the first submission of our Recourse against the Administrative Decree of Bishop Lennon dated May 5, 2009. My last correspondence with Cardinal Hummes was a letter on behalf of St. Emeric, dated September 18, 2010. Cardinal Hummes was the “Brazilian”, often mentioned as a possible Pope from the Third World before and after the death of Pope John Paul II.  

4.  Archbishop Mauro  Piacenza, who was the Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy throughout our appeals process was named the new Prefect for the Congregation on October 7, 2010. The fact that the Secretary of the Congregation was elevated to be its Prefect is unusual, without much precedent. All correspondence we submitted passed through his hands through March of 2010. After that time the Under-Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy, Monsignor Celso Morga Iruzubieta took over the role of acting secretary and he was involved in the processing of the appeals beginning in March. Both Archbishop Piacenza and Msgr. Morga Iruzubieta are, or should be, intimately familiar with the details of our appeal. The Monsignor has not yet been elevated to the rank of “Secretary”, he still is referred to as “Under-Secretary”.  

5.  Page 5 of the October 15 Universe Bulletin paraphrases Bishop Lennon’s comments, made at the First Friday Club of Greater Akron, that while he is honored to be a bishop of Cleveland, he would prefer to be serving a parish where the pastor and parochial vicars are able to be with the people . . . “. At this time we do not know what this statement implies.  

It is too early to determine how this would affect our appeal along with that of some 10 other Cleveland area churches. We will probably know more as November 30 arrives, which is the new extended deadline for the Congregation to reach a decision over our recourse.

Still hope! Vatican letter states deadline for appeal decision extended to Nov. 30, 2010

A letter has arrived from the Vatican stating that the deadline for the decision on the appeal by the parishioners regarding the suppression of St. Emeric Church has been extended to November 30, 2010. (Use this link to translate from Hungarian to English by copying and pasting text to translate into link's translation box.)

Ma, július 12-én érkezett egy levél a vatikáni Papi Kongregációtól július 2-I keltezéssel. Mint a Szent Imre egyházközség ügyvivője, a címemre kaptam. Sándor atyát délután fél négykor értesítettem a levélről.

A levél közli rajtam keresztül az egyházközség híveivel, hogy ismét szükséges volt halasztáshoz folyamodniuk fellebbezésünk kiértékelésére. Az új határidő 2010 november 30.

Valószínű, hogy a többi közösségi vagy egyéni fellebbező ugyanezt a levelet kapta egyházmegyénkben. A levél szóról-szóra megegyezik az ezelőtti hasonló témájú levéllel, csupán a dátum változott. Mivel arról nem esett szó, hogy kérvényeinkre megadták volna a bezárási parancs ideiglenes felfüggesztését, a templom továbbra is zárva marad. Sándor atya vasárnap reggel hagyta el a parókiát.

Az ügyünk nincs lezárva, és várjuk a további kibontakozást. Ami ebben a levélben különbözik az eddigiektől az, hogy ez időben 5 hónapos halasztást nyertek, a két előző esetben csupán hármat.

Nem tudjuk, hogy a püspök milyen utasításokat kapott a Vatikántól ezzel a levéllel párhuzamosan, de az feltételezhető, hogy ővele is tárgyal a Vatikán. Az is feltételezhető, hogy a püspök is beszámol az ő szemszögéből.

After the closing date protest, it was reported that Bishop Lennon would meet with representatives of St. Emeric to discuss their concerns. As of 7/13/2010, this discussion has not happened to our knowledge.

2010 június 30-án délután három órakor a templom előtti téren a clevelandi Szent Imre egyházközség megemlékezést tartott templomunk nyitvamaradásáért vívott kűzdelmünkről, majd egy méltóságteljes szentségimádást tartott bent a templomban, ami szentségi áldással és a magyar himnusszal végződött. A szertartás befejezése után a hívek és vendégeik tovább tartózkodtak a templomban, és másfél órán át orgonakíséretes egyházi énekekkel emlékeztek vissza a templom dicső múltjára. Este 6 óra után kezdett űrülni a templom, a jelenlévők nagy része könnyes szemekkel távozott.  (Continued / Több itt - in Hungarian)

Today marks the final, repeated, and determined effort of Bishop Richard G. Lennon to reconfigure the Diocese of Cleveland to his own liking. It remains to be seen if this is just Phase One. Barely a year after his arrival, Bishop Lennon put into place a process that would eventually lead to the downsizing of the number of parishes arbitrarily based on the his admittedly nebulous notion of vibrancy. The diocese has never known such a radical adjustment in its 160-year history. (full article)

Text of Éva Szabó (Templom Örzö) Speech at St. Emeric Closing Protest

June 30, 2010 is an epic day in the history of St. Emeric Parish, the parish building before which I stand.  It is our day of death.  In our 106^th year, our parish has 350 households, still serving the needs of the Hungarian-American community, especially those for whom English is their second language and who still seek spiritual guidance and liturgy in Hungarian. This parish is a community of Hungarian-Americans who wish to worship together as a congregation of faithful in the Roman Catholic Church in their native Hungarian language with traditional liturgical music.  This church in its entirety has also been and still is a center for cultural activities that embrace Christian values for members of all ages, the elderly as well as the youth, enriching lives both spiritually and socially. We cannot separate ONE man from his language, culture and faith.  These are embedded in him.  To rip these entities out at this time would be no less than destroying that ONE human being.  You have told us to prayer in our own languages for over 50 years.  Now you are taking this away from us.  The churches which have been closed are mainly ethnic and have all experienced this wrenching action.
