Endangered Catholics Speak Out and Ask to be Heard

The attached "Letter to Clergy" can be copied and passed on to anyone you wish.  Its origin and explanation is in the e-mail below from Bob Kloos, vice-president of the “Endangered Catholics” group .

Also, check out the website cited in the letter: http://endangeredcatholics.webs.com

This is another effort to inform the community of what is really happening in this terrible diocesan reorganization in which vibrant and viable parishes are being closed by Bishop Lennon against the cluster recommendations and against the will of the parishioners.

Dear friends,

Ten "one-page" narratives about our merged and suppressed parishes are NOW POSTED on our http://endangeredcatholics.webs.com website. Go have a look, and encourage everyone you know to go there and read for themselves. Parishioners have chosen words carefully and told their stories well. Spread the word. The web site can work for us.

Also posted on the site is a "Letter to Clergy" (upper right hand corner under "Further Information"). The letter was posted on September 1st as part of our letter writing campaign. 647 copies were sent to every priest, deacon, and bishop in the diocese. Religious orders were included, for the most part. If you encounter any clergy who says he did not receive a letter, blame it on me. I did my best to compile an up-to-date database from the diocesan directory and web site. If the clergy you speak with did not receive one, please direct them to the web site and get a message to me. I will update my database and send them a hard copy.

The clergy are in a key position in the diocese. They may be the only moral force that Bishop Lennon cannot ignore. A critical mass of clergy can make a difference. The challenge, of course, is to raise that number. It will take all the support we can muster to do so.

So, read the letter and share it with as many of your friends as possible. I am attaching a pdf of the letter. You can drag it to any email you send and encourage your recipients to do the same. Hundreds of thousands of parishioners in our diocese could see this letter in a matter of days if we pass it on and encourage others to do the same.

Then I would suggest that you and your friends approach clergy and ask if they have received the letter. Ask if they believe the points were well make and do they believe the endangered/appealing parishes deserve a chance to demonstrate their vibrancy.

If they understand our cause, then ask: "What can WE do to bring this shared concern to the bishop?" It is a WE problem. It will take a WE solution.

Encourage clergy you know to discuss the matter with his peers now. They know who among them are the strategizers. Those are the clergy that need to convene and lead the discussion. Ask them to contact their friends this week and to meet as soon as possible. Ask them to get back to you as soon as possible with comments. Support them in their endeavors to foster solidarity on this issue. They must find a way to make their differences known.

Parishes are due to close soon. Time is short. Letters will help, as many as possible. And we may even be able to let the media know approximately how many letters were sent.

Ultimately, it will be the solidarity of the clergy that will get the bishop's attention. They need to know that they are standing together and speaking on behalf of all the parishes in the diocese when they suggest that the bishop afford us the same opportunity he granted to Sts. Colman, Ignatius, and Stephen. So we need to approach clergy with high expectations and loads of support. This is an unsettling time for all of us, and the clergy are not in an "easy" place. Let us act now to help them help us.

Thanks,
Bob Kloos
